The first time I heard of a doula was from a dear friend who was aspiring to be a midwife. After I lost her unexpectedly, I chose this work as a way to honor her memory. It turned out to be a perfect fit for me since I was always drawn to babies as a child. As a teen and young adult I seemed to have “a way” with them. I take that intuitiveness into my postpartum work, as well. I love to connect with the babies I am working with, getting to know their particular ways and personalities. This perspective allows me to help parents find what is working best for their family. As a mother to 6 children, I often felt the need for an extra set of hands, some evidence based advice or just a listening ear. In my practice I seek to provide those things to the families I work with. I found that it doesn’t matter if it’s the first baby or the sixth, there is always a need for some additional support.
I take great joy in watching new parents, especially moms, become more confident in their new roles. Truly that is my favorite part of my work…helping families navigate all the advice and information out there to find the best fit for them.
As we have learned to do more in a virtual world, I am thrilled to still be doing the work I love with New Kind.
